Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier of Vietnam, has taken a significant step towards expanding its fleet. On September 22, 2025, the airline issued a formal request for proposals (RFP) for up to 30 new wide-body aircraft. The models under consideration are the Airbus A350-900 and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The company has expressed interest in various acquisition methods—including direct purchase, leasing, or subleasing—to flexibly adapt to current market conditions. The new aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030, with a bid submission deadline of October 8, 2025.
Current Fleet and Passenger Comfort
Vietnam Airlines currently operates a wide-body fleet of around 30 aircraft, comprising 14 Airbus A350-900s and 16 to 17 Boeing 787-9/10 Dreamliners. All these models feature a comfortable business class cabin in a 1-2-1 ‘reverse herringbone’ configuration, providing every passenger with direct aisle access. This layout is highly favoured on long-haul routes where passenger comfort is a top priority.
Financing and Strategic Vision
Financing for this ambitious project is secured in cooperation with major banks, such as Vietcombank and Citibank, which have committed to providing the necessary funds. The total value of the planned investment could reach up to $10 billion. This fleet expansion is a cornerstone of the airline’s long-term strategy to strengthen its position in the international market and enhance the quality of its passenger services.
Strengthening International Competitiveness
The new aircraft will enable Vietnam Airlines to compete more effectively on routes between Asia, Australia, and Europe, where it plans to strengthen its network of direct flights. This move comes as international air travel continues to recover from the post-pandemic crisis, giving the airline an opportunity for greater flexibility and expansion in a dynamic market.
This ambitious fleet expansion is a strategic move to optimise services and enhance passenger comfort. With this investment, Vietnam Airlines aims to position itself among the world’s leading airlines, operating a modern and efficient fleet ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
