The serious incident occurred at approximately 21:32 UTC, as Nouvelair flight BJ586 from Tunis was on approach to runway 04R, where easyJet flight U24706 was positioned for take-off. The aircraft came within approximately 50 feet (about 15 metres) of each other. During its initial approach, the Nouvelair crew had lined up for the incorrect runway; at Nice, runway 04R is typically used for departures, while 04L is used for arrivals. Following the go-around, the Nouvelair flight landed safely on the correct runway, 04L.
Both aircraft involved were Airbus A320-214s. The Nouvelair aircraft, registration TS-INP, has been part of the airline’s fleet since 2011. The easyJet aircraft, registration OE-IJZ, was delivered new in 2015 and has operated under the EasyJet Europe registration since 2018.
According to available meteorological data, thunderstorm cells were present in the vicinity of the airport, which may have been a factor in the approach. The French Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) has launched an investigation into the serious incident.

This incident once again highlights the critical importance of coordination between flight crews and air traffic control, especially in high-density traffic and adverse weather conditions.
