Order Modification: More Freighters
In April 2024, Korean Air originally placed an order for 33 A350 family aircraft, comprising 27 A350-1000s and six of the smaller A350-900s. However, the order was amended in October 2024: the A350-1000 order was reduced to 20 units, with seven passenger aircraft being converted to the A350F freighter version.
The order for six A350-900s remains unchanged, and the airline has already taken delivery of the first two aircraft.
A Strong Focus on Cargo
Korean Air has long been a major player in the global air cargo market. The decision to expand its freight capacity was reinforced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the cargo segment was crucial for stabilizing the airline’s finances. The addition of the A350F to the fleet also aligns with the company’s strategy regarding the ongoing integration of Asiana Airlines, which operates its own extensive cargo network.
According to the airline’s management, the A350 family is well-suited for its long-haul routes, primarily due to its excellent operational economics and lower emissions. Airbus reports that the aircraft offers up to a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation models.
The A350F: A New-Generation Long-Haul Freighter
The A350F is currently under development and awaiting certification from EASA and the FAA. The aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, offering a payload capacity of up to 111 tonnes and a range of approximately 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 km).
According to Airbus, the new freighter version is expected to deliver fuel savings of up to 40% compared to older freighter types. It is positioned as a competitive alternative to current wide-body cargo aircraft, particularly the Boeing 777F and models converted from older passenger jets.
Growing Interest from Carriers
There is significant interest in the A350F among carriers. As of the end of September 2024, Airbus had registered 65 firm orders from ten airlines and one leasing company. The entire A350 family, meanwhile, has accumulated a total of 1,445 orders from 63 customers.
The new A350F is expected to enter service after completing its certification process, which Airbus targets for the second half of the decade.
