First Electric Air Taxi Takes Flight Over Dubai

Joby Aviation recently announced the delivery of its first S4 air taxi to the United Arab Emirates, where the company plans to commence regular passenger flights in 2026. This timeline represents a slight delay from the original target of 2025.

Through a six-year agreement with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the company has secured exclusive rights to operate these air taxi services within the emirate. The first uncrewed test flights have already taken place in Dubai, with piloted tests personally overseen by RTA’s Director General, Mattar Al Tayer.

“The electric air taxi will introduce a new premium service in the city, offering residents and visitors fast, smooth, and safe travel to key destinations,” he stated during the test flights.

The Cutting-Edge S4 eVTOL: Eco-Friendly Comfort for Future Cities

Joby’s S4 model is designed for short urban routes—such as from city centers to airports—making it perfectly suited for the densely populated environments of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The aircraft has a capacity for four passengers and a pilot. Thanks to its electric propulsion units, its operation is emission-free and significantly quieter than traditional helicopters.

Four lithium-ion battery packs power six tilting propellers, which enable a seamless transition between vertical take-off and landing and conventional forward flight. The aircraft’s maximum cruising speed is approximately 174 knots (about 322 km/h).

While fully autonomous operation is planned for the future, all initial flights will be piloted.

Testing in Extreme Weather Conditions

Preparation for the harsh desert conditions of the Middle East was supported by two years of testing with the S4 fleet at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The S4 has undergone several piloted tests of the transition from vertical hover to forward flight—a key feature that distinguishes eVTOLs from conventional helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

Furthermore, the aircraft’s cabin is equipped with air conditioning, and all critical systems have been specially adapted for operation in extremely high-temperature environments.

Infrastructure Development: Vertiports to Connect Key Dubai Locations

The backbone of the new air taxi service will be a network of dedicated terminals known as ‘vertiports’—electrified hubs that facilitate efficient charging, take-offs, and landings for these advanced aircraft.

The first Joby Aviation vertiport is under construction at Dubai International Airport. The company is also collaborating with Skyports and Jetex to build additional vertiports and the necessary charging infrastructure in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Joby Aviation is already planning an air taxi route from Dubai to the Palm Jumeirah, which could reduce travel time from the current 45 minutes by car to just 12 minutes.

Regulatory Framework and Certification in the UAE and USA

Joby Aviation is working with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to obtain the operational certification required to begin regular flights with fare-paying passengers.

Although the company already holds a Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for commercial operations, it is still awaiting final type certification for its S4 model. A successful launch in the UAE could, however, accelerate this process for other countries, including the United States.

Air Taxi Services Planned for Saudi Arabia and Beyond

Joby Aviation’s ambitions extend beyond the UAE. In Saudi Arabia, the company plans to launch a similar air taxi network in partnership with Mukamalah Aviation, a subsidiary of the oil giant Saudi Aramco.

The company is also considering a direct route between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which would require additional approval from the GCAA.

Joby Aviation in the US: Shared Air Mobility with Delta and Uber

In the United States, Joby Aviation plans to launch its air taxi as a shared air mobility service in partnership with Delta Air Lines and Uber. Operations are expected to commence shortly after the UAE launch, likely after 2026.

The company has accumulated over 40,000 flight hours with its six-aircraft S4 test fleet, two of which are operated as part of a program with the U.S. Air Force.

Electric Aviation: An Opportunity for Urban Air Mobility

Joby Aviation’s achievements underscore the growing importance of the eVTOL aircraft segment. The introduction of these technologies has the potential to fundamentally transform urban transportation, reduce emissions, and alleviate pressure on congested ground infrastructure.

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve looked up at the sky and dreamed of flying and piloting aircraft. Now, I’m finally making that dream come true – I’m currently training to become a pilot at the Aeroprague flight school, and with every flight, I’m getting closer to my goal. It’s not always easy, but that just makes me even more determined. I want to show that when you truly love something, you can chase it – even all the way to the clouds.
