The Italian Army has initiated the long-awaited replacement of its ageing helicopter fleet. The new UH-169D Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) will play a key role in this upgrade. Its arrival signifies not only a technological leap forward but also a significant simplification of logistics and operations.
Legacy AB-Series Helicopters Phased Out After Decades of Service
Until recently, the Italian Army’s helicopter fleet relied on AB206, AB205, AB212, and AB412 helicopters. These aircraft, based on American Bell designs, performed a wide range of tasks – from basic transport missions and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) to casualty evacuation (CASEVAC).
The medium-lift AB212, derived from the American Bell UH-1 model and powered by twin Pratt & Whitney PT6T turboshaft engines, served for an exceptionally long and successful period. These helicopters were deployed in numerous international missions, including ISAF operations in Afghanistan, where they were equipped with special features such as flare dispensers against missile attacks and additional armour plating.
However, due to their advanced age and ever-increasing service and maintenance demands, these helicopters are becoming unreliable and challenging to operate further.
The UH-169D Arrives: Advanced Technology and Deployment Flexibility
The UH-169D LUH helicopter is based on the military variant of Leonardo Helicopters’ AW169M. It is specifically designed to meet the demands of the modern battlefield, covering a wide spectrum of tasks including personnel and materiel transport, reconnaissance and observation missions, special operations, pilot training, and even firefighting or search and rescue.
The new type’s advantages include an advanced digital cockpit compatible with night vision goggles (NVG), a modern communication and command system, a rescue hoist for recovery and evacuation operations, fast-roping systems, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) observation devices, a loudspeaker, and a high-performance searchlight. The UH-169D also features Leonardo’s advanced MAIR (Multi-Aperture Infra-Red) threat warning system, based on detecting the heat signatures of missiles or gunfire, providing more time for effective defence of the helicopter and crew.
The use of fixed skids instead of retractable landing gear reduces maintenance costs and allows the aircraft to land safely on virtually any terrain. Furthermore, the overall design of the UH-169D allows for exceptional armament and equipment variability and meets NATO interoperability requirements as well as those of the Italian Army’s “Forza NEC” (Network Enabled Capability) programme.
Centralised Training for New Pilots
The arrival of the UH-169D helicopters follows the earlier procurement of UH-169B training versions, used for basic helicopter crew training before transitioning to more advanced variants. Training takes place at Viterbo Airport, where a new joint national training centre for helicopter pilots of all specialisations will be established; the centre will also draw upon the wealth of experience within Italian military aviation.
UH-169D Deliveries Confirm Close Cooperation with Leonardo
The handover of the first UH-169D helicopter took place during a ceremony at the home base of the “28° Gruppo Squadroni Tucano” helicopter unit in Viterbo. General Carmine Masiello, Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, emphasised at the event that the UH-169D delivery is a product of close cooperation between the Army and Leonardo Helicopters. The aim is to create modern and flexible aviation capabilities for the future, responding not only to current requirements but also to dynamic and rapidly changing global threats.
First UH-169D Helicopter to Feature UNIFIL Mission Livery
Interestingly, the first UH-169D aircraft delivered was painted white with a prominent “ESERCITO” (“Army”) inscription on the cabin doors and the code “E.I. 111” on the tail boom. Similar white livery is used on Italian UH-212 helicopters operating in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. Some sources indicate that the first UH-169D could be deployed in Lebanon in this capacity, and it reportedly received partial UN markings for this role in February 2025 (the “UN” markings were then covered before the official handover of the aircraft).
Helicopters for ITALAIR operations (Italy’s contribution to the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon) are currently provided by the 2nd “Sirio” Helicopter Regiment of the Army Aviation (Aviazione dell’Esercito), which is also planned to be the first unit fully equipped with the modernised UH-169D helicopter.
