The pilot managed to eject successfully, landing by parachute in a field near the base. A helicopter was immediately dispatched to the scene and transported him to a hospital. According to official statements, his condition is stable, and a full recovery is expected. No one else was injured in the incident.
The crash occurred on Thursday, July 31, 2025, shortly before 18:40 local time. According to witnesses, a large plume of black smoke was visible after the aircraft went down. Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, arrived on the scene within minutes and began to tackle the resulting fire. Access to the crash site was hampered by surrounding cotton fields and difficult terrain.
The cause of the crash is not yet known. An investigation is being led by the U.S. Navy in collaboration with the aircraft’s manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. It has not been determined whether the incident was caused by a technical malfunction or pilot error.
This marks the second known crash of an F-35 in 2025. A previous incident occurred on January 28 at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, where the pilot also ejected safely. While the F-35 program, with over 1,100 aircraft delivered to date, is considered to be at the forefront of aviation technology, it has faced persistent criticism over high operational costs and recurring technical issues.
The F-35C is the naval variant designed for aircraft carrier operations, distinguished by its larger wings and reinforced landing gear. This version is deployed from the decks of the most advanced U.S. naval vessels, including the Gerald R. Ford-class carriers.
