The aircraft are intended both to expand capacity and to gradually replace part of the existing fleet. Deliveries are scheduled over an extended period, continuing into the early 2030s.
Largest Fleet Commitment for the Carrier
The order reinforces Alaska Airlines’ long-term focus on a fleet based primarily on Boeing 737 types. Following the contract, the carrier has over 170 firm orders for the 737 MAX family, primarily the 737-10 variant.
The newly ordered aircraft are intended to replace some of the older narrow-body aircraft and increase capacity on key routes in the western United States.
Dreamliners for Further Development of Long-Haul Routes
The agreement also includes the purchase of five Boeing 787 aircraft. Alaska Airlines plans to deploy them primarily on long-haul routes from hub airports in the northwestern United States.
The addition of Dreamliners will allow the carrier to expand its offerings on international routes and increase flexibility in planning long-haul operations.
Strategic Importance for Boeing
The contract represents a significant order in both the narrow-body and wide-body aircraft segments. It also confirms the long-standing partnership between Boeing and Alaska Airlines, which spans more than six decades.
